Veteran Nollywood and Yoruba theatre icon, Kola Oyewo, has passed away at the age of 80.
His death was announced on Friday via Instagram by fellow actor Kunle Afod, who described the late thespian’s exit as the end of a remarkable era in Nigerian theatre and film.
In his tribute, Afod wrote that Oyewo had “taken his final bow,” praising his outstanding talent, unforgettable performances, and lasting impact on the entertainment industry. He added that the actor’s legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Oyewo began his acting journey in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group. Over the decades, he rose to prominence as one of the most respected figures in Yoruba stage drama and Nigerian cinema.
He was particularly celebrated for his role as Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s acclaimed play The Gods Are Not to Blame, a performance that earned him wide recognition across Africa’s theatre community.
