Zazzau Emirate Turbans Alhaji Suleiman Ubale Abubakar as Garkuwan Unguwan Dosa ‎

The Zazzau Emirate Council has conferred the traditional title of Garkuwan Unguwan Dosa on philanthropist and community leader, Alhaji Suleiman Ubale Abubakar, in recognition of his contributions to humanitarian service, youth empowerment and community development.

‎

‎The colourful ceremony was held at the palace of the Hakimin Kawo in Kaduna and attracted traditional rulers, government officials, family members, friends and well-wishers from across Nigeria and abroad. Drummers, praise singers and cultural troupes added colour as the new title holder was led in procession by members of the Angwan Dosa Traditional Council.

‎Why the title matters

‎In Hausa tradition, “Garkuwan” means “Shield”. The title is conferred on individuals recognized for courage, protection of the community, and selfless service. “The title ‘Garkuwan Angwan Dosa’ is not just ceremonial. It is a call to duty – to stand as a shield for the weak, to defend the interest of the people, and to promote peace and unity at all times,” the District Head of Angwan Dosa said while presenting the turban.

‎

‎Elders explained that Garkuwan is among the highest honorary titles in the community, usually reserved for sons and residents who have demonstrated commitment to community development, conflict resolution, and philanthropy over many years.

‎

‎Alhaji Suleiman’s track record

‎Before his confirmation, Alhaji Suleiman Ubale Abubakar was known in Unguwan Dosa for his involvement in youth empowerment, support for education, and mediation in local disputes. Community members cited his role in mobilizing resources for road repairs, borehole projects, and assistance to widows and orphans as key reasons for his selection.

‎

‎Acceptance speech

‎Speaking shortly after the turbaning, the new Garkuwan Unguwan Dosa expressed appreciation for the overwhelming show of love and support, describing the honour as both humbling and inspiring.

‎

‎“I feel excited. I am happy with the outpouring of love I have seen here from family, friends and well-wishers all over. I feel honoured,” Alhaji Suleiman Abubakar said.

‎

‎He pledged to rededicate himself to serving humanity, noting that community service has long been a tradition in his family. “I am humbled by this honour and I accept it with a deep sense of responsibility. Angwan Dosa is my home, and I will continue to work with the traditional council, youth, women and all stakeholders to ensure peace, progress and development,” he added.

‎

‎“This title is not about me alone. It is about all of us. My doors remain open to everyone, and together we will build a stronger Angwan Dosa,” the new Garkuwan said.

‎

‎Community reaction

‎Residents described the confirmation as “well deserved”. A community leader noted: “Alhaji Suleiman has shown, through action, that he is a true son of Angwan Dosa. This turbaning is the community’s way of saying ‘we see your efforts and we trust you to do more’.”

‎

‎Youth leaders also welcomed the appointment, saying they expect the new Garkuwan to be a bridge between the younger generation and traditional institutions. “We believe he will carry our voices to the council and help create more opportunities for skills training and jobs,” one youth representative said.

‎

‎Looking ahead

‎With his turbaning, Alhaji Suleiman Ubale Abubakar now assumes a formal advisory role within the Angwan Dosa Traditional Council. His responsibilities are expected to include promoting unity, supporting security initiatives, and championing community welfare projects.

‎

‎The ceremony ended with prayers for peace and prosperity, followed by a Unity Football competition sponsored by the beneficiary to mark the occasion.
