Defence of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Attendance at the IPU Meeting

The ongoing investigation into Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s attendance at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting appears to be politically motivated rather than a genuine concern for parliamentary protocol. It is essential to address the facts and dispel any misconceptions surrounding her participation.

1. Right to Attend as an Observer
The IPU allows individuals, including lawmakers, to attend its meetings as observers, which does not necessarily require official nomination by Nigeria’s delegation. If Senator Natasha attended in this capacity, she did not violate any established rules. The attempt to portray her attendance as illegitimate seems more like an effort to discredit her rather than a genuine breach of parliamentary protocol.

2. Freedom of Speech and Representation
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan exercised her democratic right to free speech at the IPU meeting. Raising concerns about her suspension and alleged misconduct in the Nigerian Senate is within her rights as a public official. Silencing such discussions would set a dangerous precedent for democracy and accountability in Nigeria.

3. Questionable Suspension Process
The claim that her suspension was purely based on Senate Standing Rules remains debatable. There is a strong argument that her suspension was politically motivated, particularly given the issues she has raised about gender-based discrimination and Senate misconduct. If due process was not followed in her suspension, her address at the IPU should be seen as an appeal for fairness rather than an attempt to embarrass the government.

4. Lack of Concrete Violations
So far, there is no evidence that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan fraudulently obtained credentials to attend the IPU meeting. Until proven otherwise, her presence should not be considered a violation. Any allegations suggesting external facilitators aided her participation remain speculative and should not be used to tarnish her reputation.

5. The Need for Institutional Transparency
Instead of focusing on why Senator Natasha attended the IPU meeting, the Nigerian Senate should take a critical look at the issues she raised. Allegations of misconduct and gender-based discrimination should be properly investigated rather than dismissing her concerns as an attempt to undermine the government. A transparent legislative process is essential to maintaining public trust.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s participation at the IPU meeting should be viewed as a step toward strengthening democratic discourse. Any probe into her attendance should be fair, impartial, and devoid of political intimidation.
