The United Methodist Church (UMC) has celebrated its 100th anniversary in Zing, Taraba State, Nigeria.
speaking at the occasion, Rev. Dr. Philip Micah Dopah, Director Connectional Ministries, praised God and recognized the role of John Wesley and past missionaries in uniting church members.
Dopah urged attendees to celebrate with “clean and pure heart” and refocus on evangelism, discipleship, and community service.
He reminded everyone of the UMC’s three principles: “do no harm, do good, and stay in love with God always.”
The conference also passed resolutions regarding minimum wage, Sunday School teachers, leadership training, financial systems, and electing a Bishop.
The celebration included messages from Dopah and other leaders, as well as special awards and recognitions.
Dopah emphasised the importance of living with passion, purpose, and unwavering principles, leaving a positive legacy.
He praised individuals and districts for their outstanding contributions in evangelism, offerings, and other areas.
The conference approved recommendations to raise the minimum wage for pastors, engage Sunday School teachers as church workers, and offer a diploma course in Children Ministry at Kakulu Theological Seminary.
Due to financial challenges, the conference decided to maintain the budget system rather than the previously adopted percentage system for financial contributions.
The election of a Bishop was postponed due to the church’s recent internal issues and the need for reconciliation with other conferences. A budget of N67 million was approved for the election process when it resumes.
The total budget for the 2024 financial year was set at N2.02 billion.
Overall, the 100th anniversary celebration emphasized the history, achievements, and future directions of the UMC in Zing. The conference also addressed important issues related to ministry, finances, and leadership
